16 Oct 1917: | Honoured Military Medal, ‘During operations at Broodseinde Ridge east of Ypres from 30 September to 8 October 1917 L/Cpl 9 Battalion Munt was in charge of the ration parties daily. He showed great leadership on all occasions and kept up supplies regularly in spite of enemy barrage, machine gun and snipers’ fire. On one occasion this NCO volunteered to bring forward an extra supply of water after having just returned to the lines with the rations. This he carried out successfully during daylight – passing through the most trying and demoralising enemy shell fire’. (AWM) | |

Lance Corporal James Edward Munt MM (Service No:5426) enlisted in the AIF on 14 October 1915 with 7th Battalion. He was attached to 9th Infantry Battalion on 20 April 1916 when he embarked ex Sydney on board SS Hawkes Bay. Private Munt served in France with 9th Infantry Battalion and was promoted to Lance Corporal on 1 June 1917. He was WiA on two occasions in France - suffering shell wounds and gas poisoning. Lance Corporal Munt embarked from England for the RTA per HT Demosthenes on 16 January 1919 and was Discharged later that year.
Born in 1889 in Laidley on the Darling Downs in QLD, James was the fourth of ten children of William James Munt (b1859 in Oxfordshire, England) and Eliza Jane Morton (b1864 in County Cavan, Ireland). Eliza arrived in QLD in 1864 on board the Young England and William arrived in Brisbane QLD in 1874 on board the Alexandra. William (a Farm Labourer) and Eliza married in 1883 in Laidley, QLD where they lived until 1895. The family lived in Bundaberg and Gin Gin before settleing in Dallarnil, Biggenden, QLD in the early 1900s - William was a Farmer.
James worked as a Labourer and Farmer in Dallarnil QLD before his enlistment in WWI, and returned following his Discharge in 1919. In 1921 James married Ellen (Nell) Alice Frazer (nee Horton; b1889 in Yendarie, QLD) - Nell was a Widow. James and Nell settled in Biggenden where James worked as a Labourer and Mechanic before moving to Bundaberg in the late 1930's. James worked as a Labourer until his death 1946. Nell died in 1973.
