Private Walter Harold Hais (Service Nos:Q101277/QX40345) initially served in the ACMF with 15 Infantry Battalion from 16 May 1941 to 25 September 1942, enlisting in the AIF the following day. Private Hais served in New Guinea (9 January 1943 to 11 June 1944) with 29th Infantry Battalion, and with 15th Infantry Battalion in Bougainville (18 December 1944 - 9 October 1945). He was attached to 15th Infantry Battalion at Discharge on 27 October 1945. Son Neville James Hais (25 December 1936 - 10 December 1996) was a National Serviceman from 15 August 1956 - a Corporal (Service No:1/722786) with 11 National Service Training Battalion and 104th Infantry Workshop RAEME.

Walter was born in Brisbane QLD in 1913, eldest of three children of Walter James Hais (b1886 in Brisbane, QLD) and his first wife Annie Louisa Rendle (b1889 in Brisbane, QLD). Walter Snr (a Mechanic) and Annie (a Housekeeper) married in 1912 in Brisbane, where they settled and raised their family and Walter Snr was a Mechanic. Following Annie's death 1940, Walter Snr remarried in 1941 and settled at Birkdale via Cleveland.

Walter worked as a Farm Labourer in Birkdale via Clevelenad, where in 1941 he married Amy Margaret Ruthenberg (b1916 in Beenleigh, QLD). Following his Service in WWII, Walter and Amy settled in Brisbane, where they raised their family and Walter enlisted in the Regular Army. The couple Divorced in the late 1950s - Amy remarried and Walter, having retired from the Army, was a Process Worker. In the late 1970's Walter retired to Cleveland, where he died in 1988. Amy died in 1996.
