| 30 Oct 1918: | Honoured Distinguished Conduct Medal, "Peaceful Penetration - Low-Cost, High-Gain Tactics on the Western Front", For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty and perseverance in leading his men in a night raid on 2 July 1918, when he killed the first three of the garrison himself and captured a machine gun, which he carried along until his leg was shattered by a shell. He then encouraged his men to further efforts, and after the raid was over, started to crawl back with the captured gun. When he had completed half the distance he was picked up by his officer. | |
