Herbert John Raymond Elliott was born in Houghton, South Australia on the 14th March 1894. In his childhood he grew up in Golden Grove South Australia with his mother Louisa jane Elliott and father Fredrick Carlton Elliott. Before the war he worked as a labourer.

Herbert enlisted 22 August 1915 and embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A38 Ulysses on 27 October 1915. He served with the 3rd Light Horse and the 32nd Infantry Battalion in the Middle East. Herbert was wounded in action 28th August 1918 with gunshot wound to his right leg. This injury was identified as a compound fracture according to a medical report dated 26th September 1918. Due to the injury he did not return to active service before the end of the war.

Herbert returned to Australia on the ship Dundee Castle, disembarking on 13th May 1919 at Port Adelaide.

Herbert John Raymond Elliott died on 13th October 1977 at the age of 83. He is buried at Enfield Memorial Park, Clearview, South Australia.
