Elbert Victor Colin Lawson, known as Bert, was the youngest child of William John Lawson and his wife Winifred Lee. He was born in Ballina NSW.
The family relocated to Fortitude Valley in Brisbane Qld by 1918 and Bert was enrolled in the Boys State School.
As a teenager Bert's family relocated a short distance to Harcourt Street in New Farm, and Bert remained at that address for the rest of his life.
When he finished school Bert worked as a crane driver.
He married Miss Monica Lawson in January 1938, and in November that same year he enlisted in the Militia.
After WW2 started, Bert was discharged from the Militia so that he could enlist in the AIF, which he did on 1 October 1940 at Kelvin Grove.
Bert was attached to the 2/25 Infantry Battalion, and over the course of the war he fought overseas on four separate occasions:
1. Middle East campaign (Apr 1941-Mar 1942)
2. Papua campaign (Aug 1942-Jan 1943)
3. New Guinea campaign (Oct 1943-Feb 1944)
4. Borneo campaign (Jun 1945-Sep 1945).
After the war Bert returned to his wife and family. Bert Lawson died in Brisbane age 83 in April 1994.
