Second of three brothers (Norman and Clarrie) who served in WWII, Private Frederick Martin James LeLay (Service Nos:Q90263/QX45000) initially served in the ACMF (13 May 1941 - 28 December 1942) with MIM Force, and enlisted in the AIF 'in the field' on 29 December 1942 - graded Mechanic, re graded as Elec MV. Private LeLay served with 158 Workshop Platoon, and was attached to 113 General Transport (AGT) Coy at Discharge on 3 November 1945.
Fred was born in Sydney, New South Wales in 1918, third of four children (sons) of William Thomas LeLay (b1878 in Hartley via Lithgow, New South Wales) and Edith Emma Lucas (b1883 in Bourke, New South Wales). William - who worked for the Railways as a Ganger and Fettler - and Edith married in 1904 in Sydney, and lived in Nyngan, Brewarrina, Peak Hill and Trewilga via Parkes. William was a member of the Grand United Order of Oddfellows.
Fred worked in Bundaberg, QLD as a Sugar Cane Cutter and Mechanic, and in 1942 in Bundaberg married Lorraine Freda Doessel (b1923 in Bundaberg, QLD). Following his Discharge from the Army, Fred joined his brother Clarrie in partnership as Garage Proprietors - Kumbia Motors via Kingaroy, QLD. Fred and Lorraine settled in Kumbia, where they raised their family and Fred was a Garage Propietor. In the mid 1970s, Fred and Lorraine moved to Brisbane, where Fred worked as a Fitter/Welder until retirement. Lorraine died in 2008 and Fred in 2010.
