War Diaries; 43rd. Battalion, B Company; April 24, 1918

Our artillery carried out harassing shoots during early morning. At 4:15am enemy artillery placed a heavy barrage over the front extending from CORBIE BRAY road to South of SAILLE leSEC which lasted until 6am. Under this barrage enemy attacked the brigade on our right to the immediate south of SAILLE le SEC with the idea of occupying the outpost line. His attack was driven off by L.G. and rifle fire. Enemy re-organised and attacked again but was again repulsed with heavy casualties. The front line systems were only intermittently shelled throughout the day but the valleys in rear were heavily shelled until about 5pm. Large proportion of the shells being gas. This company was relieved on the night of the 24th by "C" Company of the 41st Bn. They took over exactly the same dispositions. Relief was completed at 11:30pm and the Coy. move back to Bivouac in the valley at J.21 leaving nucleus garrisons of L.G. teams at the following posts, J.17.c,10 85. J.23.a, 10, 80, , J.22.b,75, 30. , J. 22.c, 75,45., J.22,c60,40., J. 22,c50,15. , J.28.a, 40. 85., During the barrage in the morning Pte. Gant was killed by a whiz-bang which landed in the L.G. post of No.7 Platoon and Pte. Angus had to be evacuated with shell-shock caused by the same shell. During the relief at night T/Sgt. Lillecrap G. was killed by a burst of Shrapnell. much regret is felt throughout the Company at the loss of a promising N.C.O. in T/Sgt. Lillecrapp and of a solid soldier in Pte. Gant an original member of the Battalion.
