Of Fleming Street, Wickham, NSW

'Bank of New South Wales Roll of Honour' (Sydney, 1921), p. 197.

Entered the service of the Bank on 17th September 1914 at Newcastle West.

On arrival in England he entered the Officers' Training School, but went to France with his Battalion in December 1916.  He was wounded at Armentieres on 14th January 1917 and was recommended for pormotion to Lieutenant.

After some months in hospital, Leslie was transferred to the Flying Corps and went into training at Oxford University.  He was attached to the aerodrome at Amberley as flight-lieutenant in the Australian Flying Coprs when Armistice was signed.

LESLIE HERBERT IRWIN was born on I st May, 1898, at Wickham, New South Wales, the son of Mr. George Henry lrwin and Mrs. Amelia lrwin. He  was educated at the Wickham Public School and entered the service of the Bank on 17th September, 1914, at Newcastle West.
Enlisting in the A.I.F. in March, 1916, Leslie Herbert lrwin sailed from Australia on 1st May, as sergeant in the 35th Battalion. On arrival in England  he entered the Officers' Training School, but went to France with his Battalion in December, 1916. He was wounded at Armentieres on 14th January,  1917, and was recommended for promotion to lieutenant. After some months in hospital, Leslie lrwin was transferred to the Flying Corps and went  into training at Oxford University.
