James was the sixth of eight children of Frederick Boys Yates (born 1850 in London, England) and Evangeline Treeby (born 1856 in London, England). Frederick immigrated as a Settler, arriving in Port Phillip Bay in December 1870 on board the Newcastle. Evangeline arrived in Port Phillip Bay in April 1857 on board the Planet. Frederick was a Builder and Contractor l when he married Evangeline in Melbourne in 1877 - her father was also a Builder and Contractor. Frederick and Evangeline settled in Melbourne.
James was a Carpenter when he enlisted in the AIF in 1915 as a Private (Service No:2022). He served with the 21st Infantry Battalion and was Discharged in January 1920. Brother-in-Law Charles Edward Tirrell (Private, Driver: Service No:14843) served in WWI and sister Ethel Dorothy Yates (Aircraftwoman; Service No:110250) served in WWII.
James returned to Melbourne and was working as a Carpenter and Joiner at the Amateur Sports Ground where he met Elsie Mabel Grinstead (born 1900 in Kingston, Hepburn, Victoria. Elsie's father was Caretaker at the Sportsground, and James and Elsie married in 1921. In the early 1930s James and Elsie moved to Warburton where James worked as a Builder, before returning to Melbourne in 1943. James died in 1975 and Elsie in 1976.
