16 Aug 1917: Honoured Distinguished Conduct Medal, German Withdrawal to Hindenburg Line and Outpost Villages, For conspicuous gallantry during an assault on the Hindenburg Line near Bullecourt on 3 May 1917 - he took over command of his platoon when his officer was shot and rallied the men, leading them forward and although wounded twice himself helped evacuate the wounded setting an encouraging example to his men.
