Francis Henry Burdett SALMON (Service Number 2220) was born in Smithtown on 6th October 1890. He served an apprenticeship of five years with Warburton Franki in Sydney and joined the Tramways as an armature winder at the Randwick Workshops in March 1913. In May 1915 he was promoted to electrical mechanic. In June 1915 he enlisted in the AIF at Liverpool.
He was allotted to the 4th Reinforcements of the 20th Battalion. He embarked from Sydney in September 1915 for Egypt, where he was ‘taken on strength’ by his unit in January 1916. In March the Battalion was sent to France. He was wounded in action (shell wound neck) on 27th July. Briefly hospitalised in France, he was then sent to a convalescent camp at the end of the month. He re-joined his Battalion at the end of August, and was appointed Lance Corporal.
Suffering from boils in November 1916, he was again briefly hospitalised, then sent to a convalescent depot with impetigo. He returned to the base at Etaples on 30th November. In January 1917 re-joined his unit. He was promoted to Corporal in February 1917. In March he spent another two weeks under treatment for impetigo, before re-joining his unit in April. He was promoted to Sergeant in May. He spent most of July being treated for scabies and, again, impetigo, before re-joining his Battalion on 11th August.
On 10th October 1917 he was killed in action. He has no known grave but is remembered with honour on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial.
A war pension was granted to his widow.
