Biography contributed by Faithe Jones

Born and educated in Canada and arrived in Australia in early 1914, Ernest was the son of Mrs. G.E. and the late G. PALMER of Liverpool, England.  He was married with three children and resided at Port Augusta.  Ernest enlisted in Adelaide in the 16th Battalion in the Great War, reaching the rank of Corporal and saw service in Gallipoli and France, returning to Australian on leave when Armistice was signed enroute.  He started as a butcher in Port Augusta but then joined the Commonwealth Railways and enlisted in May 1940.  He served in the Middled East, fought through the Lybian Campaign and in Tobruk, then transferred to Palestine and Syria.  He was an excellent rifle shot and came top in test shooting and was Sergeant-Secretary of the Port Augusta R.S. Club for 3 years.
