Frederick only enlisted in October 1917 and was at the front from mid-April 1918. He was mortally wounded during the Battle of Hamel, a compound fracture of the thigh bone and died two days later in the 47th Casualty Clearing Station.

His younger brother, 7177 Private George Hathaway 34th Battalion AIF died of wounds the next month, August 1918, aged 19.

They were the sons of Frederick and Harriet Hathaway, of Rockdale, New South Wales.
