John was the youngest of six children of James Taylor (born 1877 in Northumberland, England) and Elizabeth (born abt 1879 in Wells Norfolk). James and Elizabeth married in 1899 in Wells, Norfolk and moved to Gravesend in Kent in 1900. James was an Electrician and Wireman, and following Elizabeth's death when John was born, James' mother Polly moved to Kent to care for the children. James died in 1932.

John had immigrated to Brisbane, QLD following his ftaher's death and was living in Brisbane, QLD in 1933 when he married Grace Ellen Butler (born 1909 in Brisbane, QLD). They settled in Brisbane where John worked as a Storeman. In November 1939 John enlisted in the AMCF (Service No:QX264) and served briefly as a Private with 2/3 Field Ambulance. In December 1939 he enlisted in the Australian Army and served as a Corporal (Service No:QX6538) with 2/11 Field Ambulance. John was Discharged in October 1943.

John and Grace remained in Brisbane, QLD where John worked as a Storman. Grace died in 1966 and John in 1973.
