Daniel Fitzgerald was wounded at Fromelles with the 59th Battalion, where his brother 2474 Pte. John Lawrence Fitzgerald, also of the 59th Battalion, was killed in action on 19 July 1916. Daniel was evacuated to England with a gunshot wound to his right arm. He rejoined the 59th Battalion in France at the end of September 1916. He was promoted to Corporal during early 1917 and later that month was wounded again by rifle fire. Shot in the left shoulder he was again evacuated to England and rejoined his unit at the end of June 1917. Daniel was again wounded in Belgium, during the Battle of Polygon Wood on 26 September 1917. This time the shrapnel wounds to his arms and legs were most severe and he was evacuated to Wimereux on the coast of France. He died of wounds there nine days later on 5 October 1917.
Another brother, 37563 Driver David William Fitzgerald served with the 7th Field Artillery and returned to Australia during 1919. They were the sons of David and Margaret Fitzgerald, of Bunyip, Victoria.
