His first service was as a Private (Sergeant on mebarkation to Sergeant Major on discharge) S.N. 2, 3rd Queensland Mounted Infantry, Boer War. His second service was as a Lieutenant (promoted to Captain) in the 3rd Divisional Train, AIF, WW1.
