William Matthew was born in Balmain NSW, the eldest son of James Robertson Matthew and Diana Matthew of that area. William’s younger brother, 1595A Private Alec Duncan Matthew 59th Battalion AIF had been killed in action at Fromelles on 19 July 1916, aged 21.

William had married Bessie Ilma Matthew before he enlisted and she received his medals and entitlements. They were living at Gundagai NSW when he enlisted. Bessie was living in Coogee NSW when she received his effects and medals after the war. There was also a child, William Donald Matthew who was granted a pension along with his mother.
