Biography contributed by Chris Buckley

Edward was the eighth of ten children of George Robert Nichols (born 1838 in Sydney, NSW) and Esther Lewis (born 1844 in Sydney, NSW). George was a Bricklayer in 1863 when he married Esther in Darlinghurst, Sydney, NSW. George and Esther had moved to Richmond River by 1867 - initially at Bex Hill where George was a Cedar Getter, and then settling at Tirrannin Creek via Lismre, where George was a Farmer.

Edward enlisted with the 3rd NSW Mounted Rifles in 1899 and served as a Trooper (Service No:3030) in the East Transvaal and Eastern Orange River (Murray p141). He was Discharged in 1902 and in 1911 married Sylvia Myrtle May Steele (born 1887 in Richmond, Victoria) at Semaphore in South Australia. Sylvia's parents had moved to South Australia in the early 1890s.

Edward was a Waiter in Sydney when he enlisted in the AIF in May 1916. He served as a Private (Service No:425) with 1st Machine Gun Coy 6th Reinforcements, and 2nd Machine Gun Battalion and was Discharged in July 1919.

Edward and Sylvia settled in Sydney, NSW where Edward worked as a Marine Steward. In 1934 Sylvia was hit by a car when she and Edward were crossing the road - Sylvia died in hospital.

Following Sylvia's death, Edward remarried in 1936 to Gunhilda Ruby Cheros (nee Niehuus, born 1887 in Brisbane, QLD). Edward and Gunhilda lived in Sydney, where Edward worked as a Marine Steward and Hospital Steward until his death in 1955. Gunhilda returned to Brisbane, QLD where she died in 1978.
