Samuel Shaw Templeton was born on 7 Sep 1879 in Queensland, a son to William Templeton and Grace Templeton (nee Murray). He married Mabel Bonella Lewis on 30 Aug 1919 in Brisbane.

He served in both the South African (Boer) War and WW1. First service was as a Private S.N. 372 in the 4th Queensland Imperial Bushmen, Boer War. Second service was as a Private rising to Lance Corporal S.N. 5757 in the 15th Infantry Battalion AIF, WW1.
