Biography contributed by Paul Trevor

The two enlisted sons of Benjamin and Annie Toll (nee Richard) of Charters Towers, Queensland:-

Lieutenant-Colonel Frederick William Toll DSO & Bar (/explore/people/271813) - returned to Australia;

4807 Private Osmond H. Toll - returned to Australia.

Prior to Pte. Osmond Toll re-enlisting for full-time military service during the First World War it appears that he continued part-time regular military service after serving in South Africia in 1902 with the 1st Battalion, Australian Commonwealth Horse.

When he returned to Charters Towers he continued serving with the Kennedy Regiment and newspaper articles of the day shows that he was a keen target rifle shooter, often competing throughout North Queensland for his Regiment.

In August 1914 he was mobilised for War Service with the 2nd A.N. & M.E.F. to take part in capture of German held New Guinea. This action was short lived due to the fireman causing trouble on the troopship 'Kanowna', which he was sailing on and it returned to the Port of Townsville prior to dis-embarking in New Guinea. Private Osmond Toll's service for this action lasted a little longer than four weeks.

In November 1916 when Osmond Toll volunteered for military service, he held the rank of 2nd lieutenant of 2A (Charters Towers) area, senior cadets.
