Biography contributed by Claude McKelvey

When John Joseph Vale enlisted in 1901 in the 6th QIB and his details were published with the rank and file in The Queenslander, 13 Apr 1901, he noted his N.O.K. as Mrs W. Costello, Paddington. He again served in WW1 and on his 1916 enlistment Attestation Paper he noted his N.O.K. as his mother Mrs. Norah Costello, Paddington and also that he had previously served in the Boer War.

His birth was registered with BDM Qld as John James Veale born on 18 May 1871 in Queensland, a son to Michael Veale and Hanoria 'Norah' Veale (nee Sheehan). His father passed away in 1872 and his mother remarried on 10 Aug 1874 to William Costello and they lived at Paddington, Queensland. His death was registered with BDM Qld also under the name John James Veale.

He enlisted in WW1, again under the name John Joseph Vale, in 1916 serving as a Private S.N. 2266 in the 47th Infantry Battalion AIF.
