James Richard Balfour was born in Maryborough Victoria to mother Ms Elizabeth Balfour. His occupation was a cleaner for the South Australian Railways prior to the war. He was nearly 23 year of age when he enlisted. His regimental number was 2488. He embarked 9 March 1916 on RMS Mongola to Egypt. He was transferred to the 30th Battalion in May 1916 and arrived in France 23 June 1916. He was hospitalised in August 1917 with scabies and while at a convalescent depot became ill with tonsilitis. He was transferred to England for further medical treatment in November 1917.
He returned to Australia from England 15 April 1918. He married in 1923 to Ivy Winifred in Adelaide. James Richard Balfour passed away 22nd February 1974.
