Biography contributed by Warren TURNER

Dad was in the Militia in 1942 and was in training in Brisbane when the infamous "Battle of Brisbane" erupted.  He assisted at a driver training school then was assigned to 26th Bn (AIF) at Kuranda Qld.

He attended there in May 1943 when it was under the command of Lt Col ABBOTT. The Bn moved north and became part of TORRES FORCE garrisoning the Prince of Wales, Thursday and Horn Islands.

The battalion then moved to Jacky Jacky (now Bamaga) and helped built a pier, and supplied US PT Boats and guarded the Air Field.

In early 1944 the battalion moved to Brisbane and undertook further training. Dad assisted in moving Japanese Prisoners one day.

In Nov 1944, his Bn went to Bougainville part of the 11th Infantry Bde, attached to 3 Infantry Division. The commenced operations against the Japanese on Numa Numa Trail, and later in North Bougainville. i.e. Ratsui Bay and Porton Plantations.

After the Japanese surrended the battalion went to Rabaul to collect and process Japanese POW's.  It was there that Dad was attached to the Transport Section H.Q. 11th Bde.  He made Sergeant in 1946, and came home on the Katoomba I believe.  He was discharged 6 Sep 1946 in Melbourne. - Warren Turner (son)
