"...2718 Private Lester Bates, 8th Reinforcements, 8th Battalion, of Korumburra, Vic (originally of Tenterden, Kent, England). Pte Bates enlisted on 8 July 1915 and embarked from Melbourne aboard HMAT Makarini on 15 September 1915. On 26 December 1916 Pte Bates was allotted to the 59th Battalion at Tel-el-Kebir with which unit he served until his return to Australia on 13 February 1917 suffering from Neurasthenia." - SOURCE (www.awm.gov.au)
