Archibald Edgar PRINGLE was born on 23rd September 1891 at North Sydney, NSW. He joined the NSW Government Railways and Tramways on 12th March 1914 as a Wagon Builder in the Locomotive Branch based at Eveleigh. On 14th August 1915 he was released to join the Expeditionary Forces.

He joined the AIF on 14th August 1915 and was allocated to the 11th Reinforcements to the 13th Infantry Battalion with the rank of Private (Service Number 3426). He nominated his widowed mother, Nellie Pringle, then living at Petersham, NSW, as his next of kin.

He went to Egypt at first and was transferred from the 4th Training Battalion at Zeitoun, Egypt to the 45th Infantry Battalion on 6th March 1916. On 2nd June 1916 he embarked at Alexandria for France and he disembarked at Marseilles on 8th June 1916.

On 10th June 1916 he was admitted to the 2nd Australian General Hospital at Marseilles with blistered feet. He was discharged to duty on 27th June 1916 and reached the 4th Australian Division Base Depot at Etaples on 30th June 1916. On 9th August 1916 he was taken on strength of the 45th Infantry Battalion near Pozières.

On 5th September 1916 he was promoted to the rank of Lance Corporal.

On 30th September 1916 he reported sick with what was initially diagnosed as synovitis of the right knee. After several transfers he was finally admitted to the 25th General Hospital at Boulogne on 5th October 1916, where the diagnosis was changed to scabies. He was transferred to the 7th Convalescence Depot at Boulogne on 13th October 1916, where he stayed until 1st November 1916 when he was discharged to the 3rd Light Rest Camp for one day.

On 2nd November 1916 he marched in to the 4th Australian Division Base Depot at Etaples. He stayed there until 15th February 1917 when he left to re-join the 45th Infantry Battalion, which he did the next day.

On 27th April 1917 he was promoted to the rank of Corporal.

On 7th June 1917 he was killed in action.

A deposition in his Red Cross Enquiry file provides more information. Lance Corporal W J Patterson stated:

‘… During the afternoon of June 17th, /17 I was about 8yds from Pringle at Messines at an advance. A.M.G. Bullet struck him on the head – killing him instantly. The top of his head was blown off. Do not think he was buried. I did not see him afterwards. …’

The site of his grave is unknown, and he is commemorated at the Menin Gate Memorial, Ypres, Flanders, Belgium. His place of association is Petersham, Sydney, NSW.

After his death his widowed mother was granted a pension of £2 per fortnight with effect from 3 September 1917.
