70 years ago today, on the Monday morning of the 16th March 1953, Private James Brown, 4th Battalion (Reg No-2568), carter from Berner Street, Merewether, New South Wales and 103 Victoria Street, Adamstown, N.S.W., was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 56. METHODIST 1 (WESLEYAN) O SW. 66.

Born at Merewether, New South Wales on the 14th April 1896 to George and Mary Ann Brown; husband of Elsie May Brown nee Matters (married 1921, Merewether, N.S.W., died 21.8.1970, age 74 - sleeping side by side, METHODIST 1 (WESLEYAN) O SW. 65), James enlisted on the 18th July 1915 with the 19th Battalion at Liverpool, N.S.W.

Granted leave to England from 22.12.1917 to 8.1.1918.

Granted leave to England from 19.12.1918 to 10.1.1919.

Admitted to hospital 24.3.1919 (scabies).

James returned home on the 11th June 1919, being discharged on the 3rd August 1919.

Mr. Brown’s name has been inscribed on the Merewether (Mitchell Park) Memorial Gates, Merewether (Park Street) Methodist Sabbath School Roll of Honour and The Capt. Clarence Smith Jeffries (V.C.) and Pte. William Matthew Currey (V.C.) Memorial Wall. R. BROWN inscribed on the Merewether Public School Roll of Honor. J. BROWN inscribed on the Hamilton Superior Public School Roll of Honor.

I have placed poppies at James’s gravesite in remembrance of his service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.

Service record states Died after Discharge, 14.3.1953.
