Stanley was the eldest of three children of John Stanley Beck Lewin (born 1888 in Kent, England) and Frances Eveline Phillips (born 1891 in Derbyshire, England). John, a Clerk, served with the Royal Fusiliers as a Private (Regimental No: GS 592) and married Frances (a Lace Mender) in Derbyshire in 1918. Frances and the children emigrated to Australia in 1925, and moved to Charleville in QLD. John died in England in 1930.
Stanley lived in Charleville, QLD where he worked as a Labourer until his mother's death in 1939. In 1941 he married Jessie Easton (born 1918 in Brisbane, QLD) and they lived with Jessie's family until Stanley enlisted in the RAAF in August 1942. A Flight Sergeant (Service No: 8697), he was with 6 Aircraft Depot (6AD) on his Discharge in 1945. 6AD, established in October 1943 at Oakey in QLD, repaired and overhauled aircraft and was a forward depot for aircraft operating fro New Guinea and northern Australia. 6AD also serviced, assembled and carried out test flights on aircraft, including Mustangs and Spitfires.
