Mervyn was the youngest of two children of John Patrick Lofgren (born 1886 in Ipswich, QLD) and Ethel Maud Annie Ballard (born 1886 in Ipswich, QLD). John (a Farmer) and Ethel married in 1910 in Ipswich, QLD. John was a Labourer when he died in 1919.

Mervyn was a Carrier in Brisbane, QLD when he enlisted in the RAAF in June 1940. He was a Leading Aircraftman (Service No:22658) attached to 7 Repair and Servicing Unit when he was Discharged in November 1945. Brother Eric John (Corporal, Service No:25734) also served in the RAAF.

Mervyn had married Gertrude Irene Molloy (born 1914 in Brisbane, QLD) in April 1941, and following his Discharge from the RAAF, he and Gertrude lived at Jandowie in Dalby, QLD where Mervyn was a Motor Mechanic. In 1954 the family moved back to Brisbane, QLD and Mervyn was a Motor Mechanic until his death in 1977. Gertrude died in 1991.
