He was 30 and the son of Margaret Esson (formerly Peat), of Waulkmill, Tarland, Aberdeenshire, Scotland, and the late Charles Peat.

He is remembered on the Tarland War Memorial.

Served with the City of Glasgow police force between 12 December 1905 and 10 June 1911. Police Constable (registry number 228) Division A (Central Division)division number 257. Rose from probationary through 3rd and 2nd Class to 1st class constable before resigning.

Was commended on 9 February 1908 for the arrest of a man for theft by house breaking. He received a certificate signed by the Chief Constable James Stevenson and an award of 5/- (interpretation of his records entry per Glasgow Police Museum)
