Barry enlisted in 1963, did his Recruit and Corps training and was with 1 RAR in SVN 1965-66. In 1967 he attended OCS Portsea. He was transferred to 5 RAR and deployed to SVN, as OC 5 Pl, in January 1969, where he was awarded an MID. Barry also served with 3, 6, 8/9 RAR, 2 Bn Royal Victorian Regiment, 2 Bn Pacific Islands Regiment and North West Mobile Force. He deployed twice to Singapore and twice to PNG. Barry had multiple other posting and retired in 1991 having attained the rank of Major.
