Son of Rev. James H. and Margaret Kate of 638 Buchanan Street, San Francisco, USA. Formerly of Holterman Street, North Sydney, NSW and Forbes, NSW. Brother of Leo K. Lewin of Moore Street, Sydney, NSW

Medals: 1914-15 Star, British War Medal, Victory Medal

At the time of enlisting he was working as an Accountant at the Elizabeth Street Branch of the Australian Bank of Commerce. He was well known in musical circles in Goulburn, Grenfell and Sydney as a popular singer and choir leader. He was also a member of the Royal Philharmonic Society and the time of enlisting was conductor.

Cpl Reginald Arthur Lewin

In 1910 Reginald Lewin was among one of the newly formed 'Australian Bank of Commerce's' first intakes to be trained as accountants and tellers. He also gained a reputation as a popular singer and choir leader in both Sydney & Goulburn where he worked with the bank. He was an active member of the Royal Philharmonic Society.

On the 6th August 1915, Reginald Arthur Lewin was killed in action while leading his section into the Turkish trenches. He was the first former Woodford Academy boy to be killed in the Great War. He was 23 years old.

Lance Corporal Reginald Arthur Lewin is buried in the Lone Pine Cemetery, Gallipoli. His headstone includes this inscription

AWM Summary

Reginald Arthur Lewin was born at Forbes, New South Wales on 9 December 1891 to James and Margaret Lewin (maiden name unknown). Before his military service he worked as a bank accountant, and enlisted in January 1915. Embarking on the HMAT Shropshire on 17 March, he performed in the Grand Concert held on the Shropshire on 3 April, singing “The Lord is my light”, and the duets “The battle eve” and “Watchman, what of the night?” with 1837 Corporal Jack Vincent. Lewin took part in the charge at Lone Pine on 6 August 1915, where he was mortally wounded. He is buried at Lone Pine Cemetery in Turkey.
