Son of George Thomas Usher and Ellen Usher nee Steer of Malvern Road, Hawksburn, Victoria later of Sydney, NSW. Brother of Sydney John Usher, who served as Frederick Sydney Usher nad returned to Australia on 27 September 1919 having served with the 35th Battalion.

Commenced return to Australia on 8 May 1919 aboard HT Devanah disembarking on 23 June 1919
