Malcolm enlisted in November 1968, was trained at 1 RTB and Infantry Centre. He joined 1 ARU in South Vietnam on 10 September until 7 October 1969 when he was transferred to 4 Platoon, Bravo Company, 5 RAR, as a rifleman. When 5 RAR returned to Australia he was transferred to 7 RAR, where he completed his tour of duty and. On his return to Australia he rejoined 5 RAR, staying with the Battalion until his discharge in November 1971.
