Add my storyBiography contributed by Stephen Brooks
David was born near Dubbo NSW and his mother died when he was only a year of age. He must have to moved to Fremantle WA well before the war as he was well known there. His father was also deceased at the time of his death and his medals went to his sister Elizabeth Mary Clayton.
David Main was taken ill at Etaples on 2 July 1916 and died of cerebro spinal fever at No. 24 British General Hospital, Etaples, 4 July 1916.
His brothers, 3394 Pte Alfred Ernest Main, 53rd Battalion was killed in action a fortnight later at Fromelles, 19 July 1916 and 5134 Pte Charles Hay Main, 13th Battalion, was killed in action at Pozieres only a few weeks later, 14 August 1916.
Two other brothers also served and returned to Australia medically unfit. One of them died in an accidental fall from a roof in Perth 2 May 1921.
An older brother, Bryan Thomas Main, served with the New South Wales Imperial Bushmen during the Boer War.
