19 December 1920 - The Belgian Consul-General informed Base Records that 'before leaving Australia, [the soldier] handed over to that official all he possessed which included an important sum of money for the Belgian Relief Fund, stating that he had no more relatives in Belgium'.

Joseph's brother, Jean Jacques Verswyvelt was serving in the Holland Navy and survived the war. In the 1920's Jean was still trying to locatge his brother's estate
