84 years ago today, on the Wednesday afternoon of the 15th November 1939, Private Henry James Hastings Gimbert, referred to as Harry, 17th Battalion (Reg No-447), labourer from 78 or 87 Hannell Street, Wickham, New South Wales, was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 56. ANGLICAN 1-62. 1.
Born at Murrurundi, New South Wales on the 17th October 1883 to Ephraim (also spelt Ephrim, died 10.12.1916, from 78 Hannell Street, Wickham, N.S.W., age 61) and Ellen (Nellie) Elizabeth Gimbert nee Grills (died 21.7.1945, New Lambton, N.S.W., from 78 Hannell Street, Wickham, N.S.W. and 80 St. James Road, New Lambton, N.S.W., age 86), Harry enlisted on the 20th January 1916 with the 35th Battalion at Newcastle, N.S.W.
Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board HMAT A24 Benalla on the 1st May 1916.
Admitted to hospital 11.3.1917 (gastritis), 28.3.1917 (indigestion), 3.7.1918 (influenza), 22.8.1918 (mental sickness).
Commenced return to Australia 28.3.1919.
Harry arrived home invalided on the 10th May 1919, being discharged medically unfit (melancholia, mental sickness) on the 18th August 1919.
Mr. Gimbert’s name has been inscribed on the Wickham Municipal District Roll of Honour Board 1, Wickham St. James' Anglican Church Honour Roll and Memorial Flags and the Wickham Superior Public School Roll of Honour.
Service record states Died 14th November 1939.
Not officially commemorated.

Younger brother John Thomas (Jack, born 6.4.1894, Wickham, New South Wales, dairy farmer from Bowraville, New South Wales, enlisted 23.11.1916, 3rd Battalion, Reg No-7245, RTA 27.7.1919, 1st Australian Machine Gun Battalion, died?, not officially commemorated) also served 1st A.I.F.
