Lieutenant Salter enlisted and served in the Korean War with 1st and 2nd Battalions RAR in 1953 and 1954 as Captain and Quartermaster. From 1957 to 1959 Captain Salter served in Singapore during the Malaysian Emergency and was a Major during the Vietnam War, serving with HQ 1st Australian Logistic Support Group. Major Salter served in the Army at postings in Queensland, Victoria and Tasmania before retiring in 1980.
Nat was born in St Marys, Tasmania in 1921, son of Oscar Salter (b1894 in St Marys, Tasmania) and Lola Agnes Lacey (b1897 in St Marys, Tasmania). Oscar was a Store Manager in 1920 when he and Lola married in St Mary's - Oscar served in WWI and WWII. Oscar and Lola lived in St Marys and Burnie where Oscar was a Store Manager before joining the Public Service in the 1930s. The family moved to Launceston where Oscar was a Clerk in the Public Service.
Nat worked as a Salesman in Launceston before enlisting in the Army. In 1942 in Launceston he married Nancy Jean Elizabeth Cox (b1921 in Launceston, Tasmania). Nat served in the Army and he and Nancy retired to Nerang on the Gold Coast in 1980. Nancy died in 1987 and Nat in 2000.
