Biography contributed by Adelaide Botanic High School

Francis Barclay Lorrain was born to Mother Annie Lorrain sometime in August 1893 in Kent town, South Australia. There is no record of Francis having a father. According to the National archives record, he attended Norwood primary school. After school he worked as a licensed land brokeruntil his enlistment into the Great war. He had previously trained as a cadet for the army.

Francis Barclay Lorrain enlisted in the war in Keswick SA on 25th February 1915 at the age of 21 and 11 months. He was assigned the 11th Field Ambulance in the 11th Brigade of the third division. Francis was part of the 43rd Battalion with the service number 12734. Francis  embarked on the HMAT A29 Suevic (one of four ships that transported the 11th Field Ambulance) on the 31st of May 1916 from Adelaide, South Australia. He was assigned the rank of Sergeant upon enlisting. The 11th Brigade united at the Lark Hill camp for 2 months of further training, building on the training received in Adelaide before embarkation.

The unit embarked from South Hampton to France on 24th of November 1916 to fight on the Western Front. They arrived in Le Harve, France on the afternoon of the 26th of November 1916, only eight and a half months after they embarked from South Australia. The South Australia Red Cross Information Bureau Record mentions that Francis Barclay Lorrain was wounded in his right arm by an unknown object in late October or early November of 1916 and had to be called back to England from France. Francis rejoined the unit in England on the 21st of January 1917. It was about a year later that he was promoted to regimental quartermaster sergeant on the 28th of December 1918. On the 8th of May 1918, Francis was hospitalised with severe trench fever. Due to his poor health, Francis embarked from England back to Australia on the 3rd of August 1918. He was discharged 8th November 1918.

Francis Barclay Lorrain passed away on the 3rd of September 1963 at the age of 70, from unknown causes. Francis' grave is in the Centennial Park Cemetery in Pasadena, South Australia.
