Sapper Herbert John Hitchin (Service No:591) enlisted in the AIF on 23 September 1915 with No 1 Mining Corps, and was attached to 2nd Tunnelling Coy on 20 February 1916 when he embarked with his Unit from Sydney NSW on board HMAT A38 Ulysses. Sapper Hitchin served on the Western Front, and embarked from London for Melbourne on 12 December 1918 on board HT Nestor. Sapper Hitchin was attached to 2nd Tunnelling Coy at Discharge on 10 April 1919. One of three brothers to serve in WWI, he later served in WWII as a Private (Service No:S26) in the ACMF with 2 Infantry Training Depot from 28 June 1940 to 5 February 1941.
Bert was born in Edwardstown, South Australia in 1889, seventh of ten children of William Hitchin (b1850 in Goodwood, South Australia) and Jane Elizabeth Inglis (b1853 in London, England) - Jane arrived with her parents and siblings in Port Adelaide in 1855 on board the Caroline. William was a Labourer in Goodwood, and in 1877 he and Jane married in Hindmarsh - where they lived before settling in Edwardstown, where they raised their family and William was a Farmer. In the late 1890s, the family moved to Adelaide, where William worked as a Woolscourer for Messrs GH Mitchell & Sons.
Bert worked as an Engineman in Hindmarsh, and following his Discharge from the Army, in 1920 in Yorketown, married Dora Blanche Shand (b1887 in Adelaide, South Australia). Bert and Dora ran the Melville Hotel in Yorketown before separating in 1922 - Bert went to Cowangie where he was a Bookie, and Dora moved to Hindmarsh. The couple re-united in the mid 1920s, and lived in Hindmarsh where Bert was an Engineman and Dora a Shopkeeper. Through the 1930s and 1940s Bert and Dora lived in Gawler, where Bert was a Hotel Manager and Dora the Hotelkeeper. Bert died in 1950 and Dora in 1958.
