Fargy MULLEN (Service Number 3901A) was born on 19th January 1893 at Mudgee. He worked for the NSW Government Railways as a fettler (track worker) at Berowra from 31st May 1915. He was released from duty to join the Expeditionary Forces on 18th September 1915. 

Mullen enlisted at Lithgow on the same day as he was released by the NSWGR and. As he was not married he gave his mother, Ellen Mullen, who was living in Mortimer Street Mudgee, as his next of kin. He was allotted to the 18th Australian Infantry Battalion. He embarked HMAT ‘Runic’ at Sydney on 20th January 1916. The ship reached Alexandria on 26th February. After only a month’s further training in Egypt Mullen re-embarked to join the British Expeditionary Forces on the Western Front in France and travelled to Marseilles, reaching that port on 3rd April. He was taken on the strength of the 2nd Australian Division Base Depot at Etaples the next day and the 20th Battalion on 1st June 1916.

He was killed in action on 26th July 1916 He has no known grave. He is remembered on the Villers-Bretonneux Memorial, France.

A pension of £2 per fortnight was granted to Fargy Mullen’s widowed mother from 19th November 1916.
