Joseph Alexander Tardy was one of eleven children born to John and Mary Tardy in Newcastle, Northumberland, New Brunswick, Canada. Younger brothers Frank and Robert William Tardy were also Killed In Action during hostilities on the Western Front fighting for Canada in 1916, while Isadore Tardy survived the war and lived until 1983.
