Biography contributed by Evan Evans

From Gary Mitchell, Sandgate Cemetery

A WWI Digger of The Great War, now resting at Sandgate Cemetery.

50 years ago today, on the 1st August 1972, Private Leonard Keith Way, also known as Len, 35th Battalion (Reg No-6844), labourer from Robert Street, Tenambit, New South Wales, was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 76. ANGLICAN 3-232. 55.

Born at Tenambit, New South Wales on the 5th March 1896 to William and Alice Maud Way; husband of Maude Way nee Lowe (married 9.12.1918 at the C of E Parish Church of St. George, Perry Hill, Lewisham, United Kingdom, died?), Len enlisted April 1917 with the 18th Battalion at Newcastle, N.S.W.

Admitted to hospital 8.2.1918 (influenza).
Wounded in action - 6.4.1918 (GSW left foot, severe).

Len returned home with wife Maude on the 12th November 1919, being discharged on the 20th December 1919.

Mr. Way’s name has been inscribed on the Tenambit Public School Roll of Honour (unveiled date unknown), Tenambit Soldiers’ Memorial (unveiled on the 22nd June 1924, 20 names inscribed, would appreciate better photos of Memorial and Roll of Honour, located at Tenambit Public School, Edward Street, Tenambit, N.S.W.) and the East Maitland St. Peter's Anglican Church Roll of Honour.

Younger brother John Alfred (18th & 35th Battalions, Reg No-6845, born 1898, died 1982, district unknown) also served 1st A.I.F.

I visited Len’s gravesite June 2016 and located a wooden cross that unfortunately had been destroyed, so July 2016 I placed a cross adorned with poppies in remembrance of Len’s service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.

I will be submitting an application to DVA asking for a Commonwealth War Graves Plaque, curbing and marble chip to restore Honour and Dignity to Mr. Way.

Contact with descendants would be greatly appreciated.

Lest We Forget.
