Cecil fought bravely in the 1917 battles of Menin Road, Polygon Wood, Poelcappelle and Passchendaele. He was accidentally wounded on the 11th of October 1917, when he picked up a nose piece of a dud shell, and started to twist the tip and it exploded causing horrific wounds. He eventually died on the 23rd of October 1917, aged 17 years and 9 months old.
