On 21st July 1914 he joined the NSW Governemnt Railways and Tramways as a junior porter (temporary) in the Traffic Branch at Sydney. On 26th October 1914 his position was made permanent. On 15th January 1915 he was released to join the Expeditionary Forces.
He joined the AIF on 12th January 1915 with the rank of Private. He was posted to the 4th Reinforcements to the 4th Infantry Battalion.
On his Attestation Paper, Dugald nominated his mother, Flora Lindsay of Skipness, Kintyre, Argyleshire, Scotland, as his next of kin and gave his occupation as ‘Railway Porter’.
His record shows he reached Gallipoli on 31st May 1915 as a member of reinforcements to the 4th Infantry Battalion. The Battalion had been involved in the original landings on 25th April 1915 and subsequently in defendd the beach head at Anzac Cove. In August 1915, along with the rest of the 1st Brigade, the 4th Infantry Battalion led the charge at Lone Pine. It was during the Battle of Lone Pine that Dugald was reported missing in action between 6th and 9h August 1915. A subsequent Court of Enquiry determined that he had been killed in action in this period.
He is commemorated at the Lone Pine Memorial, Gallipoli Peninsula, Canakkale Province, Turkey. The Australian War Memorial gives his place of association as Sydney. After his death his mother was granted a dependant’s pension of 20 shillings per fortnight with effect from 16th January 1916, to be reviewed after 12 months.
