Valentine Murray MacLURE was born on 14th February, 1876 in Carlton, Victoria to William MacLURE who came from Scotland and Louisa Florence LAUGHTON who came from Manchester in England - they married in 1874 in Victoria

In January 1902 he joined the New Zealand Army  (Service No. 9539) & went to South Africa to serve in the South African War (2nd Anglo Boer War) He was a Private with the 2nd Regiment, 10th Contingent, H Squadron who were nicknamed the "Trusty Tenth"  

It was a South Island Contingent and left Lyttelton  New Zealand on 19th April, 1902 & arrived in South Africa on 27th May, 1902 which was 4 days before peace was declared - He was a member of this unit for 5 months and they were at Newcastle in Natal, South Africa when the war ended on 31st May, 1902 -The 10th contingent sailed for home in July, 1902 & he was discharged after 5 months service

He was awarded the Africa Star Medal & a Campaign Medal in the Boer War & continued living in New Zealand in Dundein in 1905 and Omaru (Otago) in 1911

Later, on 1st September, 1914 he was living in Adaminaby in the Snowy Mountains region of NSW when he enlisted as a Private in the 3rd Australian Infantry Battalion to serve in WW1 - he enlisted in Sydney and embarked on 20th October 1914 on the ship Euripides

Valentine died of wounds received in action on 7th July, 1914 in the Dardanelles, Gallipoli and was buried at sea by the Reverend C. H. Mayne between Gallipoli and Alexandria - his name is memorialized on the Lone Pine Memorial & the Australian War Memorial

He was awarded the 1914-15 Star, British War Medal & the Victory Medal in WW1
