Died on this date – 4th August…… Andrew Wilson Pettigrew was born at Balmain, Sydney, New South Wales in 1893.

His father – Alexander Ferguson Pettigrew died in 1899.

Andrew Wilson Pettigrew enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force (A.I.F.) on 14th December, 1914 as a 22 year old, single, Compositor from Surrey Fair, Rockdale, Sydney, NSW.

On 11th February, 1915 Private Pettigrew, Service number 1613, embarked from Sydney, NSW on HMAT Seang Choon (A49) with the 4th Infantry Battalion, 3rd Reinforcements.

He was transferred to “A” Company, 4th Battalion & allotted a Service number of 1510 on 30th April (?) 1915.

Private Pettigrew embarked from Alexandria on 5th April, 1915 on Troopship Lake Michigan to join M.E.F. (Mediterranean Expeditionary Force) – Gallipoli Campaign. He joined 4th Battalion at Gallipoli on 2nd May, 1915 from Hold Party.

He was admitted to 4th Field Ambulance at Gallipoli Peninsula on 14th June, 1915 with Gastritis & was returned to duty on 16th June, 1915.

Private Andrew Wilson Pettigrew was wounded in action at Gallipoli. He was admitted to HMS Ascania on 7th August, 1915 with shrapnel wounds to neck & ribs. Private Pettigrew was transferred to Cairo on 11th August, 1915. He was admitted to 1st Australian General Hospital at Heliopolis on 11th August, 1915 & transferred to No. 3 Auxiliary Hospital the same day.
Mrs Pettigrew, Surry Fair, Rockdale, NSW, was advised by Secretary Defence on 20th August, 1915 that her son Private A. W. Pettigrew had been admitted to 1st Australian General Hospital, Heliopolis on August 11th with bullet wound to neck.

On 1st September, 1915 Private Pettigrew was admitted to Helouan Convalescent Hospital & discharged to Zeitoun on 19th September, 1915 for active service.

He embarked from Alexandria on 20th October, 1915 on H.T. Franconia to rejoin his Unit after being classified “A” (fit for active service). He re-joined his Unit at Anzac on 30th October, 1915 from wounded.
Private Pettigrew was awarded 2 days Field Punishment on 6th December, 1915 for wilful neglect of arms & accoutrements on active service on 5th December, 1915.

He was awarded 28 days Field Punishment No. 2 for being Absent without Leave on 22nd January, 1916 at Tel-el-Kebir.

On 15th March, 1916 Private Pettigrew was appointed Lance Corporal.

Lance Corporal Pettigrew embarked from Alexandria on 23rd March, 1916 on H.T. Simla & disembarked at Marseilles, France on 30th March, 1916.

He was wounded in action in France on 24th July, 1916 at Pozieres. He was admitted to 1st Australian Field Ambulance on 24th July, 1916 with G.S.W. (gunshot wound/s) to thigh then transferred the same day to 6th M.A.C. Lance Corporal Pettigrew was transferred & admitted to 44th Casualty Clearing Station on 25th July, 1916 then transferred to No. 16 Ambulance Train. He was admitted to No. 1 Australian General Hospital at Rouen, France on 26th July, 1916 & embarked for England on 28th July, 1916 on Hospital Ship Western Australia.

On 29th July, 1916 Lance Corporal Pettigrew was admitted to Stoke-Upon-Trent War Hospital, Newcastle, Staffordshire, England with G.S.W (gunshot wound/s) to Thigh & Gas Gangrene.

Lance Corporal Andrew Wilson Pettigrew died on 4th August, 1916 at Stoke-Upon-Trent War Hospital, Newcastle, England from wounds received in action in France – G.S.W Leg, Gas Gangrene.

He was buried in Hartshill Cemetery, Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire, England where 7 other WW1 Australian War Graves are located.
