Biography contributed by Evan Evans

From Gary Mitchell, Sandgate Cemetery

One of two brothers who Fell during The Great War, awaiting memorialisation at Sandgate Cemetery, not forgotten.

105 years ago today, on the 11th October 1917, Lance Corporal Frank Fleming, 46th Battalion (Reg No-2898), ironmonger from 14 Everton Street, Hamilton, New South Wales, was Killed in Action at the Battle of Poelcapelle, Zonnebeke, Belgium, age 20 years 8 months.

Born at Armidale, New South Wales on the 2nd February 1897 to Joseph Ferguson (died 26.8.1930) and Ada Fleming (died 2.7.1943) of 14 Everton Street, Hamilton, New South Wales and 73 Estell Street, Maryville, N.S.W. and Coolah Road, Broadmeadow, (Hamilton West) N.S.W., Frank enlisted May 1916 at Newcastle, N.S.W.

Mr. Fleming’s name has also been inscribed on the Hamilton (Gregson Park) War Memorial, Hamilton Municipal District Roll of Honor and the Hamilton Methodist Church & Sunday School Roll of Honour (photo, unveiled on the 12th June 1916, 28 names originally inscribed, 4 Fallen, 60 names now inscribed, 6 Fallen, located at the Wesley Church, corner of Beaumont and Denison Streets, Hamilton. N.S.W.). Name not inscribed on the Armidale Public School Honour Roll or the Armidale School Old Boys and Masters Great War Memorial Gates.

Older brother Walter (Wal, 36th Battalion, Reg No-437, born 1894, Armidale, New South Wales, KIA 7.6.1917, Battle of Messines, age 22) awaiting memorialisation same location.

There is no headstone at the Fleming gravesite, therefore no memorial inscription to tell us of the loss of their sons during The Great War, so April & September 2017 I erected Memorial crosses adorned with poppies in remembrance of their 2 boy’s service and supreme sacrifice for God, King & Country. ANGLICAN 1-76. 58.
