Albert was the son of Albert and Emma Jane Foster [nee Riches]. He left
Adelaide on the Anchises on 28 August 1916, disembarking at Plymouth,
England on 11 October. Upon completion of further training in England, Albert
was sent to France from Larkhill on 23 November. Albert was appointed Lance
Corporal on 13 October 1917 and attended the 1st Anzac Gas School from 16
December to 22 December. After leave he rejoined his battalion on 26 January
1918.
He sustained a gunshot wound to his eye on 28 March 1918 and was
admitted to hospital at Etaples on 2 April. Albert was admitted to the 20th
General Hospital at Camiers with scabies. Base Records reported to Emma
Foster on 29 August that Albert was dangerously ill. It was later reported that
this information was incorrect and that “The report should refer to another
soldier bearing a similar regimental description.”1
Albert served in France for the remainder of the war and returned to Australia
per Soudan on 12 May 1919. He was discharged on 4 August.
