Biography contributed by Claude McKelvey

NoteJohn Florence Daly has also been incorrectly recorded as Florence John Daley on one of his Boer war service records.

John Florence Daly served in both the South African (Boer) War, in two contingents, and WW1. First service was as a Private S.N. 34, 2nd Queensland Imperial Bushmen, Boer War. Second service was as a Private rising to Shoeing-Smith S.N. 617, 6th Queensland Imperial Bushmen (1st Draft), Boer War. Third service was as a Private S.N. 2417, 15th & 52nd Infantry Battalion AIF, WW1.

When he joined the 2nd QMI in 1900 and his details were published with the rank and file in The Queenslander, 20 Jan 1900, he noted he was single and his address was Muir St, Toowoomba. He is recorded in the Boer War Service Paybooks for the 2nd QMI, Bk 1 p. 32, where it is noted he directed part of his pay to Mrs. Jeremiah Daly, Muir St, Newtown, Toowoomba. He served the entire tour of the 2nd QMI and was discharged in Brisbane on 17 May 1901.

Not long after he was selected in the First Draft of the 6th QIB and embarked again for South Africa in Aug 1901. The members of the draft mainly consisted of men who had served in previous contingents in South Africa and were assembled as reinforcements for the 5th and 6th QIB contingents already in South Africa. He is recorded as Florence John Daley in the Boer War Service Paybooks for the 5th QIB (to which he was allotted), Bk 4 p. 55, where it is noted he directed part of his pay to his mother Kate Daly, Muir St, Newtown, Toowoomba. He rerurned to Brisbane where he was discharged in Aug 1902.

He enlisted again in 1916 for WW1 and on his Attestation Paper, dated 29 Feb 1916, it is noted that; he was born at Toowoomba and was 37 years 5 months of age; he was married and a lineman; his N.O.K. was his wife Mrs. Katherine Daly, Phillip St, Toowoomba, Queensland; and he had previously served in the 2nd and 5th contingents and Doyle's Scouts in South Africa.

John Florence Daly was born on 27 Sep 1878 at Toowoomba, a son to Jeremiah John Daly and Katherine Garrahy Daly (nee Healy). He was twice married. He first married Mary Catherine Gleeson on 26 Jun 1907 in Queensland and they had 2 children before Mary passed in 1923. He then married Mary Weimers on 8 Nov 1930 not long before he passed in Apr 1931.
