Lieutenant William Frederick Edgerley (Service No:922) served with 9th Light Horse Regiment from 26 November 1914 to 26 July 1919. Enlisting as a Private, he embarked with his Unit from Adelaide on 1 April 1915 for Gallipoli on board HMAT A17 Port Lincoln. Progressing through the ranks, he was commissioned in 1919 and was a Lieutenant when his appointment was terminated on 26 July 1919. Lieutenant Edgerley was appointed to the Army Reserve in 1921, and served in WWII (1940 - 1945) as a Captain with 4 Garrison Battalion (SA) and 3 Infantry Training Battalion. Son Mark (Service No:417466) served in the RAAF in WWII.
William was born in Cornwall, England in 1895, eldest of three children of Reverend Albert Richard Edgerley (b1885 in Lancashire, England) and Martha Janetta Edmunds (b1861 in Lincolnshire). Albert was a Wesleyan Minister and Martha was Headmistress of a Girls' School in 1894 when they married in Cheshire. Albert and Martha lived in Yorkshire before immigrating in 1913, arriving in Adelaide, South Australia on board the Runic with their children. They settled in Adelaide where they raised their family and Albert was a Methodist Minister.
William was a Farm Labourer before enlisting in WWI. In Riverton in 1919, he married Vera Kelly (b1894 at Giles Corner, South Australia). William and Vera lived in Riverton before settling at Birdwood where William was a Farmer. By 1940 they had moved to Adelaide where William was a Manager (Tractors) when he enlisted in the ACMF. Vera died in 1978 and William in 1980.
